How the University of East Anglia Scaled PebblePad Across Multiple Disciplines

Every academic has their own preferred approach to marking and feedback. The challenge is delivering that flexibility while maintaining consistency for students across a programme.

In this video, Professor Lexy Buchan from the University of East Anglia explains how PebblePad helps deliver a more consistent assessment experience across disciplines and large cohorts, without asking academics to compromise on the way they work.

The Ambition

The University of East Anglia (UEA) wanted to build on the success of PebblePad in its medical school and scale its use across the institution. With a centralised Learning Technology team supporting academics from every faculty, the goal was to provide a consistent, high-quality experience for students while enabling adoption across a diverse range of disciplines.

The Challenge

Following site-wide adoption in 2022, PebblePad grew far faster than expected. Usage increased from around 2,000 users to more than 10,000 internal users in less than three years, alongside almost 30,000 external users, including placement supervisors, mentors and assessors

What began in medicine quickly expanded into health and social care, education, biosciences and other disciplines. As adoption accelerated, UEA needed to ensure academics could confidently implement PebblePad while maintaining a consistent and intuitive experience for students across multiple schools and programmes.

The Solution

Led by Professor Lexy Buchan, Lead Learning Technologist at the University of East Anglia, UEA developed a structured, academic-led approach to implementation and support.

By combining pedagogical expertise, learning technology best practice and central governance, the team helped academic departments adopt PebblePad in ways that aligned with their teaching requirements while maintaining consistency for students.

The result is a scalable model that supports institution-wide adoption, reduces complexity and enables a single platform to meet the needs of multiple disciplines and professional programmes.

“

Our main goal is to give the best student experience possible and to do that we’ve got to give the best support possible.
