Warm welcome from CEO and Founder opens MiniBash 2023 with Shane Sutherland, CEO and Founder of PebblePad, reflecting on the challenges and opportunities facing higher education and the growing role of experiential, process‑focused learning.
Drawing on conversations with universities across the UK, Australia, Canada, and North America, Shane explores what he describes as multiple “crises of confidence” in higher education — including confidence in content‑driven teaching, traditional assessment practices, student wellbeing and belonging, digital platforms, and the overall value of the university experience.
The talk highlights a growing shift away from end‑point assessment towards surfacing the process of learning, making transformation visible, and supporting students to plan, reflect, evidence, and make sense of complex learning experiences such as placements, projects, and work‑based learning. Shane also reflects on curriculum transformation, the limitations of learning management systems, and the need to reduce digital fragmentation while supporting the whole student journey.
The session introduces a high‑level framework for thinking about learning, belonging, employability, professional identity, and authentic assessment across the student lifecycle, setting the context for the talks and provocations that follow throughout MiniBash.
This talk took place at the studio, Birmingham in June 2023.
