It’s been an amazing conference, hasn’t it? Yeah. Yeah. Yep. Exactly.
So falls to me I’m very fortunate to be able to do this, to just share a little bit of, my impressions of the conference with you. And, this is very much a collaborative activity in two senses. So the first is that there have been so many wonderful stories that have been told about your practice, a lot of generosity in sharing, and vulnerability in asking questions and, talking about some of the the challenges that you’ve had and people offering solutions. And there’s been so much wonderful sharing. And what I’ve done is taken some of your words and, your thoughts and I want to share them back to you in the form of a story.
And so I’m hoping that you’ll actually recognize some of these things that, I mentioned as we go through. And the other way in which it’s collaborative is that I need a little bit of audience participation.
So when you see me raise my hand like this, I would like everyone to call out the word supportive.
So we’ll have a little practice.
I’m hoping that you will all be a very Supportive.
Audience.
Just like that.
If you see me do this, then I would like the next time I raise my hand for you to be louder. And if you see me put two hands up, I want you to take the roof off. Okay?
So the theme of our con conference was supporting the ambitions of higher education and this piece is just called supporting ambitions.
When you were a child, impressionistic, open, wide eyed with potential and possibilities, what was it that you wanted to be?
A firefighter beating down flames and rescuing cats?
Perhaps an explorer, circumnavigator, cartographer, the plotter of routes and charter of maps?
A spy, a tightrope walker, juggler or arborist, or cape billowing superhero undaunted, unstoppable, and always on the side of the good?
And were your family Support you.
You know, you are all of these things.
And what was it that you wanted to do?
Did you see yourself building, designing, taking the insubstantial potential and shaping it, framing it, guiding those who need a Support it. Structure, a road map, the secret to pulling off a magic trick. Did you imagine your Supportive. Capacity?
What we do is knowingly, insightfully, deliberatively guide.
We are the architects, the engineers, the planners of the whole damn town.
But more than that, we are the blue construction workers, navigating that void between knowledge and practice, laying the stepping stones out to exit that twilight zone and enter simply the zone.
Together, we’re rocking that Scottish dancing, inevitably stepping on some toes. Sorry. That’s okay. We’re creating something bold and we are designing spaces, human experiences.
Together, we’re designing our future.
So how do we build our way?
Show the intent of your actions.
Understand the community in which you work and what it is they need.
And if what they need is a stout and Slaughtered. Rope to pull them through the quagmires, then we shall twist the strands of yarn to create that one unified strength.
But who will your network be? Well, that’s easy.
Take a look to your right.
Go on.
Now, look to your left.
Take a glance over your shoulder.
Now, focus ahead.
Here are your people. Co conspirators, allies and friends. Help each other to see what it is that you’ll need to feed your trees.
So come back to your toy box. Find your way home to the land of wonders.
Do you choose Lego or Buzz? Is your story plot or character driven or both? There are as many ways to play and create as stars in the heavens. Don’t be constrained by the size of your telescope.
Discover your own constellations and then change, adapt, and grow. Start over, invent, create, embed, surface, articulate, refresh, reshape, redesign.
Share your possibilities, your strategies, your wins.
We’ll be here to celebrate them. This community, wise, collegiate Throw it in.
Thank you.
